There’s no sure thing in the American job market, but nursing, and specifically the RN to BSN career path comes pretty close. The healthcare system is booming, and even political debates over what that system should look like can’t change the fact that American healthcare is bigger than any other system, and just keeps growing. Baby Boomers are growing into old age, the next-largest generation (the Millennials) are coming of age, and the health infrastructure can’t even keep up.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job market for nursing in general is growing by 16%, and for higher-level specialists like Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse-Midwives, and Practitioners, the field is growing by an incredible 31%. If everybody who wanted to be an RN went through retraining and entered the field, there still wouldn’t be enough to take up the slack. This is why the online msn degree is so popular these days and with good reason.
However, many Registered Nurses working today find themselves stuck at a career plateau because they lack a four-year bachelor’s degree. While an associate’s degree or diploma is enough to get started, for positions with more responsibility and pay, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) has become the standard; in fact, many hospitals will no longer hire RNs with less. This situation has led to many working nurses deciding to return to school and complete their BSN, and the demand has been heard. Universities and colleges all over the US are putting together online RN to BSN programs to keep up.
Advantages of Online RN to BSN Programs
Online programs have one major advantage for working nurses – they are flexible enough that busy professionals can work their education around their extremely demanding schedules. Most nursing schools have set up their online programs in an asynchronous format, so students do not have to be online at a set time to do their coursework, and since these programs are designed for students who already have experience and an RN license, clinical practicums can usually be done where the student already works.
Not only do nursing students save time online; they also save money, since online tuition rates are usually lower than on-campus rates (not to mention, there is no need to commute to a college campus). Online courses are generally designed to make up for anything the student might miss from an on-campus program, such as student support and networking with fellow students, either through virtual teamwork assignments or optional on-campus orientations or meet-ups.
Online education in nursing is also very well established and developed. The Alliance for Nursing Accreditation Statement on Distance Education Policies makes the case that all distance program must meet same standards as face-to-face programs, a requirement that all reputable online programs have adopted. Check out our report on The Growth and Importance of Online Nursing Programs to gain a better understanding of this career’s climate.
How We Ranked the Best Online RN to BSN Programs
All colleges and universities ranked are regionally accredited, and their nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). All are ranked by U.S. News & World Report for added reputability. In addition to reputation, we considered affordability (based on Non-Resident tuition) and perceived success (based on alumni salary data gathered from the Department of Education’s College Scorecard website). All metrics are weighted evenly.
